  • A movie night will take place on Friday, October 17 at 7:00 PM at Ryckman Park where the film Frankenweenie rated PG will be shown under the stars. The event offers free popcorn and ice cream while supplies last and invites families to bring blankets and lawn chairs.  City of Melbourne Beach
  • Jerry Vaughn—owner of Down the Road Thrift Shop—has helped military families secure full burial uniforms free of charge over the past four years, assisting 168 families in honoring their veterans. His service recently fulfilled the final wish of 92-year-old veteran PFC Richard Acosta Guerrero by providing the complete uniform, medals, patches, and ribbons needed for his funeral.  FOX 35 Orlando

  • Today, Brevard County's first Nordstrom Rack opens at Avenue Viera in the former Bed, Bath and Beyond space, offering on-trend apparel, accessories and home décor at up to 70% off.   • SpaceX is set to launch a Falcon 9 rocket today from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station at 5:27 a.m.—it will send 28 Starlink satellites into low-Earth orbit and the booster will attempt a drone ship landing about eight minutes later.  Florida Today

  • The Brevard Achievement Center will hold its 12th Annual Performing Arts Showcase at the King Center in Melbourne—featuring performances by students and adults with special needs.  Florida Today

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Eastern Florida State College will host two FAFSA Nights to help high school seniors complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid and learn how to apply for grants and scholarships — the first event is Tuesday, November 18 from 5—7 p.m. at the Melbourne Campus located at 3865 N. Wickham Road, Building 2 Room 201, and the second event is Wednesday, November 19 from 5—7 p.m. at the Cocoa Campus at 1519 Clearlake Road, Building 5 Room 125.  Space Coast Daily
  • The UF/IFAS Extension Brevard County Office in Cocoa will host the full-day Beginning Beekeeping workshop on October 30 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 3695 Lake Dr—attendees will learn bee biology, equipment use, and hive management with lunch provided as registration closes on October 27 at noon.  Space Coast Daily

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A Florida court decision nullified the open carry ban, and Publix allowed customers to openly carry firearms in its 900 (stores) while many other chains continue to ban guns. Some shoppers worry about safety while gun rights groups say the change reaffirms constitutional rights.  Florida Today

  • The Cocoa Tigers will host The Villages Charter on October 17 at Dick Blake Stadium—Terry Spain and Zane Garcia will call the game and live coverage will begin shortly before the 7 p.m. kickoff on Space Coast Daily Facebook and YouTube pages.   • Eastern Florida State College men's soccer player Stephen Gilbert was named the FCSAA Player of the Week after scoring his first hat trick in a 3-0 win against USC Lancaster on Saturday. The sophomore now leads with nine goals and his team will take the field at Orlando Health Stadium on Wednesday at 7 p.m. against Miami Dade College.  Space Coast Daily
