BUSINESS NEWS

  • SpaceX has begun producing 1,000 hexagonal heatshield tiles per day (from its facility nicknamed the bakery) at Cape Canaveral and aims to boost tile production to 7,000 per day to support future Starship launches.  Florida Today
  • SpaceX launched its Starship on Oct. 13 from Starbase in Texas and the rocket’s upper stage flew near Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The company will test a new Starship version and plans to begin launches from Florida soon (as it seeks to improve its commercial space efforts).  Florida Today
  • SpaceX will launch its Falcon 9 rocket from Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral on Thursday, Oct. 16, with a four-hour early morning window from 2:42 a.m. to 6:42 a.m. as it deploys 28 Starlink broadband satellites, and the first-stage booster will target landing on its drone ship A Shortfall of Gravitas in the Atlantic Ocean—helping prevent sonic booms in Brevard County.  Florida Today
  • Dassault Falcon Jet CEO Thierry Betbeze attended the opening of a new maintenance, repair, and overhaul aircraft facility in Melbourne today—highlighting the company's push to boost local aviation services.  Florida Today
  • Whole Foods will open a new 37,000-square-foot store at 2035 Viera Blvd in Viera on November 6 at 9 a.m.—guests will enjoy complimentary coffee and local bites with the first 300 receiving a promotional tote bag and discount coupon. Earlier this year, stores opened in Boca Raton and Miami while four more in Jacksonville, Doral, Valrico, and Bradenton are in development.  Florida Today

  • The 27th annual Melbourne Independent Filmmakers Festival will run from October 16th–18th at Premiere Theaters Oaks 10 (1800 W. Hibiscus Blvd.) under the Space Dance theme to honor Space Coast heritage and raise funds for the No Limits Academy. The festival will feature the Florida premiere of Making Megaforce at 6:00 p.m. on October 16th and the world premiere of The Man Behind the Six Million Dollar Man (3:45 p.m.) on October 18th.  Space Coast Daily

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City workers contained a major sewage leak on Sarno Road (east of Apollo Boulevard) after more than 24 hours of repairs since it was first reported Sunday morning, and repairs continue as crews install line stops to bypass the rupture.  WFTV 9

HEALTH NEWS

  • Attendees gathered at the Health First Breast Center at Gateway for a Breast Cancer Awareness event held Oct 9 in Melbourne where they saw new screening technology—like mammography, ultrasound, and AI. The event—organized with local groups—also offered a special screening rate for uninsured patients until the end of October.  Hometown News
  • Florida's Baker Act lets law enforcement, mental health professionals and judges detain individuals for up to 72 hours for a mental health exam when a person is in crisis and may harm themselves or others. The law is used at facilities like Circles of Care (Melbourne) and Palm Point Behavioral Health to help those who cannot seek help on their own.  Florida Today

  • On October 14, Heritage girls won the Cape Coast Conference bowling championship by defeating Space Coast 3-0 at Shore Lanes Palm Bay, and Astronaut boys claimed their title with a 3-0 win over Melbourne.
