  • A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket will launch from Cape Canaveral on Oct. 9 at 9:34 p.m. ET carrying 24 Project Kuiper broadband satellites into low-Earth orbit (weather permitting). Residents can view the nighttime launch from select beaches and parks (following posted rules).  Florida Today

CULTURE NEWS

  • Eastern Florida State College Theatre Department will present I Never Saw Another Butterfly at the EFSC Cocoa Campus stage on October 24, October 25, and October 26 — advance tickets cost $15 and free admission is offered to EFSC and Brevard Public School students with valid ID. Directed by Selena Ambush, the play is based on the poetry of Jewish children in Prague and addresses themes of hope and loss.  Space Coast Daily

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Florida homeowners near the Indian River experienced flooding from a King Tide that left yards saturated and the only road for several subdivisions flooded—county officials say funding challenges have delayed plans to fix the roadway.  FOX 35 Orlando
  • The National Hurricane Center said a low-pressure area in the Atlantic will likely become Tropical Storm Jerry soon—forecasters expect it to form in the next 48 hours and send strong swells and dangerous surf to our coast. Models show the storm tracking west-northwest before possibly turning north.  Florida Today

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Space Systems Command awarded Blue Origin a $78.25 million contract to build a new payload processing facility at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station to boost launch capacity on the Space Coast — the company will finish construction by 2028 to support more launch providers and increase mission readiness. The award comes as part of the Space Force’s efforts to strengthen partnerships with industry — helping improve both national security and commercial launch operations.  Space Coast Daily
  • NASA and Blue Origin are preparing to send twin ESCAPADE spacecraft to study Mars' solar wind later this fall from Kennedy Space Center — Blue Origin will launch its second New Glenn rocket from Cape Canaveral Space Launch Complex 36 and more details will be shared soon.  Space Coast Daily
  • SpaceX will launch its Falcon 9 rocket for the KF-03 mission from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station tomorrow at 9:34 p.m. ET—if needed, a backup launch will occur on October 10 and the reused first stage will land on the Just Read the Instructions droneship in the Atlantic Ocean.  Space Coast Daily
  • Due to the government shutdown, visitors in Brevard County face restrictions as some federally funded sites like Canaveral National Seashore have closed their gates and staffed facilities. Outdoor areas at Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge remain open for trails and wildlife drives—services such as restrooms, trash collection and educational programs are not available.  News 6

  • Florida Tech Athletics reinstates paid entry for non-members by charging $10 for adults 18—54, $7 for adults 55 or older, and $5 for non-student attendees while continuing to offer free entry for students, faculty, staff and young children. Director Jamie Joss said ticket revenue will fund new concessions and game day improvements—student-athletes worry that the fee may reduce future attendance.  The Florida Tech Crimson
