COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Patrick Space Force Base Library celebrated its 75th anniversary last month when over 80 guests gathered to view photos, enjoy refreshments, and reflect on its long service to the community. Since opening in 1950 — with major updates in 1992 and 2020 — the library now supports mission services for Airmen, Guardians, families, and retirees and will soon expand with a larger conference room, flexible spaces, a bigger children’s area, and a dedicated STEM zone.  Space Coast Daily

  • Blue Origin is expanding its presence on the Space Coast with Rocket Park, which now employs 4,000 workers+ it is the only firm building rockets and moon landers locally.  Florida Today

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Melbourne Independent Filmmakers Festival will host the world premiere of the documentary The Man Behind the Six Million Dollar Man: The Untold Story of Martin Caidin on Saturday, October 18 at 3:45 p.m. at Premiere Theaters Oaks 10 in Melbourne. The film will highlight Caidin’s influence on local film and space history — with net proceeds benefiting No Limits Academy — as part of MIFF's 27th annual event.  Space Coast Daily

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Bugs, a juvenile green sea turtle that underwent a five-month rehabilitation at the Sea Turtle Healing Center at Brevard Zoo, was released at 10 a.m. on Oct. 1 from Pelican Beach Park in Satellite Beach and returned to the ocean. The turtle had been rescued in April with severe injuries and was treated with negative-pressure wound therapy, antibiotics, and thorough cleaning every three days—promoting healing until the wounds cleared.  Hometown News
  • Florida's hurricane season has been quiet in 2025, and post-tropical Humberto pushed Hurricane Imelda away—averting a landfall. Forecasts show that La Niña and warm Caribbean waters may lead to more storm activity later in October, though no immediate danger is expected.  Florida Today

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • County crews will monitor drains & clear water in Mims as heavy rains are expected this weekend. Residents have faced frequent flooding in low-lying areas, and officials are working with FDOT to address missing ditches that worsen water pooling.  FOX 35 Orlando
  • Daylight saving time will end when clocks are reset at 2 a.m. EST on Sunday, Nov. 2 — giving residents an extra hour for sleep. Lawmakers have not passed the Sunshine Protection Act — so the current time change schedule remains in effect.  Florida Today
  • Some Space Coast NASA employees remain hopeful they will keep working if the government shutdown continues, and union president Kevin Smith said his team is staying on the job. Congressman Mike Haridopolos expects the shutdown to be short term & that work will soon return to normal.  News 6
  • The 2025 Municipal & Special District Election will be held November 4 for Indialantic, Melbourne Beach, and the Barefoot Bay Recreation District. Voters must register by October 6 and mail ballot requests must be made by October 23—election officials urge every eligible voter to take part.  Space Coast Daily

  • Melbourne's Suntree United Methodist Church at 7400 N. Wickham Road will host the free 8th Annual Mental Health Fair on Saturday, Oct. 4 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.—retired Major General Gregg F. Martin will deliver a keynote address and sign copies of his book while experts lead mental wellness seminars.  Hometown News
