  • FPL is undergrounding nearly 3 miles of power lines in a Palm Bay neighborhood—a project that will serve about 250 customers and finish in five months. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Hurricane Gabrielle strengthened from a Category 1 to a Category 3 storm on Monday as wind speeds jumped 30 mph in just a few hours—experts say warmer oceans are making storms intensify quickly, which may leave less time for residents to prepare.  Florida Today
  • Hurricane Gabrielle has strengthened into a Category 3 storm and is set to turn north, passing east of Bermuda so it will miss Florida. Officials warn that dangerous rip currents and rough surf will affect Brevard until Sept. 23 — even strong swimmers are urged to stay out of the water as temperatures climb later this week.  Florida Today
  • Today, the National Hurricane Center is tracking Hurricane Gabrielle over the central Atlantic and two tropical waves in the Caribbean—Gabrielle is not a threat to land yet while both waves may develop into tropical depressions later this week. One wave has a 30 percent chance to form within 48 hours and the other has a 10 percent chance, with gusty winds and heavy rains possible in parts of the Caribbean and Puerto Rico.  Space Coast Daily

  • A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket will launch three solar science missions from Kennedy Space Center on Sept 24 at 7:30 a.m., including NASA's IMAP probe to study the sun. Weather permitting, people in Melbourne and nearby areas may see the launch as a streak in the early morning sky (visibility depends on cloud cover).  Florida Today
  • Earlier today, the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office mourned K9 Gator—laid to rest after an untreatable stage four cancer diagnosis—and honored his service with Corporal Lance Behringer as his final meal was provided by Island Animal Hospital.  Space Coast Daily
