COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Supporters gathered at State Farm Stadium in Arizona to honor Charlie Kirk who was shot on September 10 during a speaking event. A tribute (fifteen billboards and a planned street renaming) in Melbourne will soon debut with funding from A.J. Hiers.  Space Coast Daily

BUSINESS NEWS

  • SpaceX is working with federal partners to turn launch sites near Cape Canaveral into busy spaceports with Falcon rockets set to fly more than 100 times in 2025—an effort to make space travel as common as air travel. The company is growing its Starship program and building new facilities to support more rocket launches while keeping the public safe.  Space Coast Daily

EDUCATION NEWS

  • FLORIDA TODAY invites readers to nominate current Brevard educators such as elementary and high school teachers, after school instructors and college professors for its Teacher of the Week feature. Starting Sept 28, voting will run until noon on Thursday—winners will be announced online Friday and in print on Sunday.  Florida Today

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • After conservative activist Charlie Kirk was killed, Melbourne Mayor Paul Alfrey proposed renaming a stretch of Cypress Avenue in Eau Gallie as Charlie Kirk Lane to honor him and help Lamb & Co. Fishmongers recover from threats following a controversial social media post by owner Kalli Lamb. The proposal will be discussed by City Council on September 24 (meeting day), and Alfrey urged residents to accept Lamb's sincere apology.  Florida Today
  • Northrop Grumman’s second B-21 Raider stealth bomber, built on the Space Coast in Melbourne, flew its maiden flight from Palmdale, California on Sept. 11 and began flight testing as it readies to replace older B-1B Lancer and B-2 Spirit fleets (cost $692 million each in 2022 dollars).  Florida Today

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Eastern Florida State College men's tennis team had a good first day at the ITA JUCO Men's Southeast Regional Championship in Jasper, Alabama with six singles players advancing to the round of 16 and two doubles teams reaching the quarterfinals (wins came from strong play by top seeds Fernando Martinez Belinchon and Pablo Garcia).  Space Coast Daily
  • Brevard County high schools have set a busy sports week starting today with volleyball games at Astronaut and more contests in golf, bowling, swimming and football from September 23 to 26—teams will play at various local venues.  Florida Today
