Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 16th of August.
Good morning, Melbourne.
🏘️ Community
Tom Wasdin, a former basketball coach, businessman and philanthropist from Brevard, celebrated his 90th birthday on July 30 at the Radisson Resort at Port Canaveral—his journey from humble beginnings near Waldo to local success was honored by family, friends and community leaders.
His party highlighted a life of service and achievement that remains a source of pride for the area.
🎓 Education
Brevard Public Schools Superintendent Mark Rendell said he stands by his decision not to rehire former Satellite High teacher Melissa Calhoun after an investigation found she used a student's chosen name without parental permission — a violation of state law.
He said the district will hire educators who respect parental rights as it prepares for the 2025—2026 school year.
Former Brevard County teacher Melissa Calhoun spoke exclusively with Florida Today about a complaint that arose after a student's chosen name was used at Satellite High.
She explained the events that followed—her interview sheds light on how the incident unfolded.
🌲 Environment
Residents are advised to test their soil and use slow-release nitrogen as required by Brevard County rules to fertilize their yards and protect water bodies—careful watering helps nutrients reach plants without harmful runoff into the lagoon.
Homeowners should avoid fertilizing during dormancy or before heavy rain to further guard the health of the nearby water systems.
🏥 Health
In Brevard County, Health First’s First Flight EMS Medical Director Dr. Larissa Dudley says e-bike and scooter injuries are rising as trauma teams treat severe head and body injuries from vehicle collisions—often due to improper helmet use.
She urges riders to wear properly rated motorcycle helmets and protective gear while following traffic rules to reduce harm.
