- ➤ Tropical Storm Erin (set to become the season's first hurricane today and to turn into a major storm by August 17) is gaining strength as it curves north away from Florida. The National Hurricane Center is also tracking Invest 98L, which will move inland over northeastern Mexico or southern Texas by late today and may bring heavy rains. Florida Today

- ➤ Brevard County reported two new dengue cases last week, bringing the total to eight locally acquired cases of breakbone fever. County officials were puzzled by the unexpected rise and used mosquitofish—fish that eat mosquito larvae—and targeted spraying to control the outbreak. Florida Today
