- ➤ Brevard Public Schools voted on Aug. 12 to ban cellphones and electronic devices in all grades; the ban will begin in 30 days once the rules are finalized—officials say the change will help kids pay more attention and talk with each other, and studies show it may also lower bullying and improve grades. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Tropical Storm Erin is expected to become a Category 3 hurricane by August 17 as it shifts westward—then turns north away from Florida—and may bring rough surf and stronger rip currents along the Space Coast. Florida Today
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ On Aug 12, the ULA Vulcan rocket carried national security satellites from Cape Canaveral for the U.S. Space Force. The successful flight marked its first national security mission — a major step as ULA plans to replace Atlas V and Delta IV on future launches. Florida Today
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Rabbits with horn-like growths caused by the Shope papilloma virus were reported in Colorado—Florida has not seen any wild cases. Experts advise not touching infected rabbits since the virus is not contagious to humans and note that five cases of a different rabbit virus have affected domestic rabbits since 2020. Florida Today
