- ➤ Former teacher Melissa Calhoun reached a settlement with the state board after she lost her job for using a student’s preferred name without parental approval; the deal lets her keep her teaching certificate while she serves one-year probation, pays a fine and takes an ethics course. She said she did not know she was breaking any rule and a school official said her return to local classrooms is not planned this year—her interview marks the first time she has shared her side of the dispute.
