  • Melbourne’s Daily Bread has rebranded as Providence Connects and shifted from a soup kitchen model to offering food distribution, mobile outreach, and a housing complex to address homelessness—its last meal was served in May and ground breaking is planned for later this year or early next.  Florida Today

  • Today, SpaceX will launch a Falcon 9 rocket from Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station carrying 24 satellites for Amazon’s Project Kuiper during a 27-minute window from 10:01 a.m. to 10:28 a.m. + The booster will land on a drone ship off the coast and no sonic booms are expected in the area.  Florida Today

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Former teacher Melissa Calhoun reached a settlement with the state board after she lost her job for using a student’s preferred name without parental approval; the deal lets her keep her teaching certificate while she serves one-year probation, pays a fine and takes an ethics course. She said she did not know she was breaking any rule and a school official said her return to local classrooms is not planned this year—her interview marks the first time she has shared her side of the dispute.  News 6
  • Florida students will start school on Aug. 11 in most counties, with a few districts beginning on Aug. 12, 13, or 14. A state law sets Aug. 11 as the earliest start day and requires public kindergarten students to receive 720 net hours over 180 school days—ensuring a full-time schedule.  Florida Today

  • The St. Johns River Water Management District is conducting a 17-acre prescribed burn at the Micco Water Management Area in south Brevard to reduce hazardous fuel loads and maintain fire-dependent natural communities (officials monitor weather conditions to control smoke impacts).  Space Coast Daily

  • The Space Coast will host eight events from Aug. 8 through 14 that will give residents local entertainment, including a movie night in Cocoa Beach on Aug. 9 at 6 p.m.—and an Oddities Market at Melbourne Auditorium on Aug. 10 from noon to 4 p.m.—with extra options like a Sunday market at Intracoastal Brewing, a songwriter showcase on Merritt Island, Science Sunday at Brevard Zoo, a writers meeting in Eau Gallie, live theater at Titusville Playhouse and at Melbourne Civic Theatre, and a pickleball mixer in Palm Bay.  Florida Today
