Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 30th of July.
Good morning, Melbourne.
💼 Business
On Tuesday, July 29, a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket launched 28 Starlink internet satellites from Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station — photos captured the rocket as it ascended over Florida.
The next launch will send NASA's Crew-11 to the International Space Station on July 31 from Kennedy Space Center.
🚨 Crime
Michael Tengstedt was arrested on Saturday morning for speeding at 103 mph and driving under the influence on State Road 528 in Brevard County—he faces charges under Florida's new super speeder law with a $1,000 bond.
🌲 Environment
Record sargassum deposits have coated beaches near Melbourne since March, with the rotting seaweed causing a foul smell and possibly blocking sea turtle paths.
Experts say warmer ocean water plus nutrient-rich runoff are fueling the bloom and could irritate skin and breathing.
🏛️ Government
City officials issued a precautionary boil water notice for residents at 1215 East Sun Circle, 1184 Rivermont Drive, and 1030 through 1075 Tanglewood Lane as utility crews work to repair a hydrant valve — the notice will remain until water tests confirm it is safe to use.
NASA said that nearly 4,000 workers have left through a voluntary departure program that cut the agency's headcount from 18,000 to about 14,000—budget cuts and program changes raise concerns about upcoming missions.
