  • Khan the Jaguar, born in Jacksonville in 2013 and moved to Birmingham Zoo in 2017—has arrived at Brevard Zoo in Melbourne where he will soon be paired with a female jaguar.  Florida Today

  • SpaceX is set to launch a Falcon 9 carrying two O3b mPOWER satellites from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station — scheduled for a 5 p.m. EDT liftoff on Monday, July 21 — to boost SES's broadband network. The booster will try to land on a drone ship in the Atlantic as weather is closely monitored for summer showers.  Space Coast Daily

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Khan the Jaguar, who turns 12 today, has been moved from Birmingham Zoo to Brevard Zoo in Melbourne as part of a Species Survival Plan to pair him with 5-year-old Lua — a move meant to help conserve this near-threatened species. The zoo said Khan will gradually be introduced to his new home — joining two other jaguars already residing there.  Florida Today

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Brevard County Public Works and FDOT District 5 completed a $76K signal upgrade at the busy intersection of Palm Bay Road and Babcock Street in half the planned time, finishing on July 13. The project fixed hurricane damage vulnerabilities—ensuring the intersection runs safely for heavy daily traffic.  Space Coast Daily
  • After more than a year of gridlock, Brevard County and its firefighters agreed on a new contract that raises wages for EMTs and paramedics by 16% to 22%—a move meant to help with staffing issues. County commissioners will vote on the deal on July 22—while concerns over work-life balance and 80 vacancies persist.  News 6
  • Brevard County firefighters will receive significant pay raises under a new three-year contract approved by union members with increases ranging from 6% to 21% and fire medics’ starting salary rising from $52,000 to $68,000—this deal aims to address recent staffing shortages caused by resignations amid low morale.   • The Perseid meteor shower started on July 17 and will run until August 23, with experts saying the peak on August 12 may show 50 to 75 meteors per hour although a bright moon may lessen fireball views.
