CRIME NEWS

  • Allen G. Arias, 47, was convicted on June 17 of aggravated manslaughter for neglect that led to the death of his 87-year-old grandmother—he had been arrested in 2019 after hospital staff discovered she was in severe neglect at Holmes Regional Medical Center.  Space Coast Daily
  • On June 17, 2025, law enforcement officers in Brevard County arrested several suspects on open charges — including drug paraphernalia possession, theft, manslaughter, and domestic battery — with bonds ranging from $0 to $3,000.  Space Coast Daily
  • A Palm Bay woman, Tekayiaha Alize Hardy, 26, was arrested on June 18 for leaving the scene of a fatal hit—and-run that killed 23-year-old Andrew Ryan Sofranko on Dec 25 in Melbourne when he was crossing South Harbor City Boulevard and she remains in Brevard County Jail on no-bond status.  Florida Today

  • The Juneteenth ceremony hosted by the Greater Allen Chapel AME Church honored former slave (and Melbourne founder) Balaam Allen with a new headstone at the Line Street Cemetery. Officials said the dedication was followed by a tour of the Melbourne Founders Museum at Crane Creek (1001 Brothers Avenue).  Florida Today

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A divided federal appeals court upheld a judge’s order that stops new septic tank permits in parts of the Indian River Lagoon — a move to protect Florida’s manatees. The moratorium will take effect July 17 — the ruling also directs the state to begin a biomedical assessment program and supplemental feeding to address rising environmental concerns.  News 6
  • The FWC reported that Brevard County now leads the state in manatee deaths in 2025—raising concerns about environmental stress on marine life. Patrick Rose from the Save the Manatee Club explained on Good Day Orlando that experts are looking into why more manatees are dying and what steps might help reduce the losses.  FOX 35 Orlando
