Good morning, Melbourne. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 10th of April.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Federal budget cuts to food programs have reduced food bank supplies, so local groups in Brevard County are organizing donation drives to help neighbors in need—Backyard Dems of Merritt Island, Blue Ripple of Satellite Beach and Peaceful Brevard lead the effort. Residents are encouraged to donate non-perishable items at upcoming monthly meetings to support families facing rising food shortages.  Florida Today
  • Today, the Brevard Sheriff's Office and its partners at the Children’s Advocacy Center planted blue and silver pinwheels to raise awareness for National Child Abuse Prevention Month in Brevard County. EDUCATION NEWS

  • Brevard’s school board met this week to review options for McNair Middle School including a possible merger with Kennedy Middle – no final decision was made as community members expressed concern over the school’s small size and loss of programs. • A Brevard County teacher lost her job for calling a student by a name the student preferred since state law requires using legal names. Her contract will not be renewed past May 2025 — her teaching certificate will be reviewed following an investigation into her deliberate noncompliance.  News 6

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, a failing manhole cover led to the emergency closure of a section of S. Courtenay Parkway on Merritt Island, with repairs expected to take about two days and possibly through the weekend (temporary fixes do not delay bus routes reaching schools before 9 a.m.). Motorists are advised to take an alternate route after 9 a.m. by turning onto Cone Road west from S. Courtenay Parkway to Tropical Trail, then south to Brandy Lane, and finally back onto S. Courtenay Parkway.  Space Coast Daily
