ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Alligator mating season has begun as temperatures rise, and residents are advised to avoid feeding gators & keep pets away from water. The season lasts through early September so locals should stay alert during outdoor activities.  Florida Today
  • Brevard County begins mid-April on a lagoon restoration near the Eau Gallie Causeway that will dredge a muck pit and pump material on a 7-mile pipeline to Palm Bay (boaters should navigate cautiously) as work continues through mid-2027 to improve water clarity and habitat.  Space Coast Daily
  • Brevard County residents can drop off up to 24 tires per household from April 16 to 18 at two sites (800 Perimeter Road in Titusville, 3 Pilots’ Place in Valkaria) to help reduce mosquito breeding.  Space Coast Daily

  • NASA's Artemis II mission launched from Kennedy Space Center on April 1, 2026, sending four astronauts on a 10-day mission around the moon. Residents in Melbourne noted that the SLS rocket was visible overhead from Viera.  Florida Today
  • NASA plans to launch a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket tomorrow at 8:03 a.m. from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station to send a Cygnus XL spacecraft to the International Space Station; the schedule was revised after a second launch was removed.  Florida Today
  • The Brevard County Board of County Commissioners passed a resolution on April 7 designating the county as a Purple Heart County to honor service members wounded or killed in action.
